Hurricane Katrina: 8/29 Remember New Orleans
We are now at the fourth year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and as much as some hate to bring up the topic (NOLAnotes comes to mind) I think discussion of the event helps remind people that there is still more to do in the region for a full recovery.
Loki, the creator of HumidCity, posted an audiocast today rehashing his thoughts about Katrina.
The New York Times spent nearly half of a...

Volunteering Waning in Recession, Report Says — This strikes me as odd. I would have assumed that during a recession/depression more people would be willing to go out and volunteer (as opposed to moping around the house being useless.)
The Misery Index: A Reality Check — America had its least miserable moments under Reagan and Clinton.

What Should Colleges Teach? — Stanley Fish on how English composition classes spend too much time doing cultural analysis, instead of teaching students how to, you know, write well.
In Case of Emergency — The new FEMA chief seems to be a perfect pick. He focuses on state and local governments doing more… and citizens stepping up and helping their neighbors.

Gargantuan NOAH 'Ark' Proposed to New Orleans with...
How do you know when your building plan has gotten unnecessarily crazy and pretentious? When it’s named after a Biblical figure who was fabled to save life as we know it…that might be a clue.
NOAH (New Orleans Arcology Habitat) is a massive, 1200-foot city within a building that’s hurricane-proof and can actually float (don’t worry, it’s tethered to something or other).
The healthcare debate… instead of the yelling and screaming antics, we actually see some rational questions, albeit from an unlikely character — Yosemite Sam!
Schwab Sued
“Charles Schwab Corp was sued by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who accused the discount brokerage of fraudulently misleading investors about the safety of auction-rate securities.” (via Reuters.)
Schwab responds with essentially a big “fuck you” to Cuomo. Including this whole bit about his attempt at nationwide jurisdiction: “We are equally mystified by...

The State of Editing — “Much of the writing and non-writing world seems to misunderstand and devalue the role of editors. Many writers resent them, believing them naught but capricious gatekeepers and malicious copy-wreckers. Very few editors deserve that reputation.”
Question Box — They are putting call boxes in Africa and India that allow villagers in remote regions to talk to...

I have a ton of stuff to go through, comment on, and share… My internet access was limited by my short move from Louisiana to Los Angeles. But I’m finally here in California, and here are a few things from the past week or so…
Americans destroying perfectly functional cars — Philip Greenspun, with his always insightful posts, tackles the Cash for Clunkers program. I much prefer...

Pop Nihilism: Advertising Eats Itself — “Mass media’s codependant relationship with advertising has destined both industries to failure.”
Teach Drinking — Drinking by under-21-year-olds is often done underground and as a binge. By lowering the drinking age to 18, the age considered to be granted “adult” status and military service requirements, we can provide safer...
