Things to Read for July 9

BingerThe Obama Effect” — Prior to the election Republicans generally approved of the Supreme Court’s job, while Democrats disapproved. After Obama was elected, Democrats overwhelmingly approve, and Republicans now disapprove. The odd part — we still have the exact same Supreme Court justices. I’m not sure what to be more upset over: the political system, or the stupidity of people.

Advice from an Economist Who Saw 1929” — From the article, “If GM was on the verge of bankruptcy, it should have been shut down. […] if there is no such market demand, they should not be allowed to exist. Let the market decide if these firms deserve to exist.” AMEN!

Credit card companies are watching you” — Basically, if you start drinking more now, or start visiting a marriage counselor, your credit card firm might label you as riskier, and in turn raise your interest rate. I wish we as Americans would move away from using debt as their primary payment method (for booze, homes, cars, vacations…).

History is bunk after all” — We believe what we want to believe when it comes to history. So it’s all mostly rubbish.

What to Do About Binge Drinking? — Letters sent to the NYT about how to curb binge drinking… the most interesting one being from a mother who lost her daughter to binge drinking, suggesting that we move the drinking age to 18, therefore allowing college students to drink in public where ill-effects can be monitored and appropriate action taken. (No bartender is going to allow an unconscious patron to just lay there — whereas at a house-party, someone is less likely to call for paramedics.)
