Les Pensées de Ed

Random quotes, images, and thoughts from Ed Ireson.

News/Gatherings: July 22

“A tiny glass telescope, the size of a pea, has been successfully implanted in the eyes of people with severely damaged retinas, helping them to read, watch television and better see familiar faces.”

Mayor Ray Nagin wants hurricane-displaced people who plan to return to New Orleans counted as residents in the upcoming U.S. Census even if they live elsewhere.” — Okay, Nagin. Do you really think anyone is paying attention to you anymore? (via DNO)

A couple with the same name who found each other through social networking website Facebook are to tie the knot.” — Normally, I would expect to make an Alabama joke here, but no, not this time… thank you Lubbock, Texas.

Pinch of Reality Threatens the California Dream” — “The rest of the nation, which has historically looked to California as a model for fierce economic independence and freewheeling innovation, may now see that the state looks like every place else — just with better beaches.” Better beaches still makes it worth it…

Teach Naked. — Studies show that PowerPoints and other high-tech tools in the classroom actually hinder education. I thoroughly agree with this, the classes I feel like I got the most out of, where those that involved everyone sitting in a circle discussing the day’s topic. We pushed and shoved each other intellectually, broke down norms and ideologies, and broadened our horizons. Having a professor read from a PowerPoint is simple laziness.

F-22 Raptor Pass

Stop the F-22 — I’m to catch so much flak for this one, but when the Secretary of Defense (the one who was chosen by Little Bush) and Air Force Secretary say no thanks, I’m hard-pressed to listen to the politicians wanting to continue the program. Clearly there are Union interests in keeping the production going, hence many Dems and Republicans are lining up in support. No one wants to risk pissing off the Unions. But, with a savings of $1.75 billion, it seems like a pretty easy choice to cut the program. Obama is making the right choice.

White House Changes the Terms of a Campaign Pledge About Posting Bills Online — The President promised to post on the Internet any bill that was on his desk to sign. Guess what, he lied. Blaming the issue on “technical” reasons, is nonsense. Posting the bill before it is approved by Congress defeats the purpose. (We’ve all heard of last-minute changes by Congress.) Obama is making the wrong choice.
