News/Gatherings: August 13

I have a ton of stuff to go through, comment on, and share… My internet access was limited by my short move from Louisiana to Los Angeles. But I’m finally here in California, and here are a few things from the past week or so…

Americans destroying perfectly functional cars — Philip Greenspun, with his always insightful posts, tackles the Cash for Clunkers program. I much prefer his alternative idea… increase broadband speeds.

The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare — Some interesting points on the healthcare reform issue. You know, rational ideas, that don’t involve a government-run system (although it sounds like even Obama, behind closed doors, realizes that a public option is not going to happen.)

Modern science builds the case for an old-fashioned virtue - and uncovers new secrets to success — Work hard. Do well. It’s that simple. Mostly.

Neo-cons love Stewart — I’m less interested in the fact that neocon’s like Stewart, what’s more enthralling is the reasons they do. People are tired of the cable news name-calling and yelling back and forth nonsense. We want strong, rational, intellectually stimulating discussion on the news. Jon Stewart provides that.

Passengers Kept on Plane for Nine Hours — Excuse me? America has become too damn passive. That’s ridiculous. It’s not like you’re in prison. Make some phone calls. Hop down one of the emergency slides (I mean, who HASN’T wanted to do that?)…

Colbert gets the Afghan election. Ashraf Ghani said, “If you understand New Orleans, you understand Afghanistan.” Colbert’s response: “Oh my god. I had no idea Afghanistan was that fucked up.”
